'You are what you eat' is as true for dogs as it is for humans.
Victoria Stillwell explains the links between dog obesity and behaviour problems and shows how you can have a happy, fit, healthy dog by giving them the right food and the right exercise.

Turn your dog from a heavyweight into a lively, lithe companion by learning about good and bad food, how much to feed and managing weight and behaviour problems with her special diet plan.

Exercise is crucial to well-being - learn how much exercise different breeds need, how to motivate reluctant exercisers and deal with problems when exercising such as running off, pulling on lead and much more.

Author - Victoria Stillwell - Publisher - Harper Collins

In this major "Channel 4" series, expert dog trainer Victoria Stilwell is parachuted into families where the resident pet is, literally as well as metaphorically, tearing the family apart. Through observation and interviews, as well as secret filming with a 'pet cam', she assembles her evidence and diagnoses the problem.

A clear, practical training programme follows. "It's Me or the Dog" offers a superb, practical manual for pet owners - whether faced with training a new puppy or with correcting the bad habits of an existing pet.

Seeing the world from the dog's point of view is key. She explains how dogs learn and provides a timed, structured programme for both puppies and older dogs, plus a wealth of problem-solving advice.

Our Dogs readers asked to contribute to book

From Sarah Knight, University of Portsmouth
I am a Psychologist from the University of Portsmouth UK. A particular interest of mine is how pets can benefit our lives. There is a growing body of scientific research in this area, and it has been found that owning pets can enhance physical good health. For example, it has been shown that spending time with animals, especially dogs, can lead to lower blood pressure and increased levels of seratonin (a ‘happy’ hormone).

Last year I conducted some research together with Dr Victoria Edwards, OBE. We found that owning a dog can lead to a number of physical, social and psychological benefits for humans, especially for older (i.e., post retirement) people. This project attracted much media attention from as far as Australia and India, whilst also reported across the UK in local and national newspapers such as the Daily Telegraph and Daily Express.

Detailed findings from this kind of research are often intriguing, but usually published only in scientific journals that are inaccessible to ‘non-scientists’.
Yet the subject is clearly of great interest to members of the general public. As a result of the media coverage that our project generated, I was approached by a book agent who would like me to write a book that brings together scientific research findings with real-life stories concerning the rewards of owning a dog. This would be written for a broad readership.

Therefore, I invite readers of Our Dogs to send me anecdotes that might be included in this book. For example, how has owning a dog affected your life? Have you noticed health benefits or made friends through having a dog? Does your dog motivate you to go out and walk, or give you a sense of well-being?

If your contributions are chosen I will contact you with further details. Anyone interested please write to: Dr Sarah Knight, University of Portsmouth, Department of Psychology, King Henry St I, Portsmouth, PO1 2DY.
